Charles J Greenberg is the Founding Library Director for the Wenzhou-Kean University Library, situated in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. Prior to his appointment in late 2013, Charles was the Research Services Librarian for the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library of Yale University. One very important project he maintained at Yale is the Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library, a repository of medical student theses started in 2003 as a joint project with the School of Medicine (YSM) Office of Student Research. Charles has worked for over 25 years in academic libraries, including both Columbia (1985-1998) and Yale (1998-2013). Charles was fortuitously introduced to NDLTD in 2000 when he spontaneously attended the annual meeting at the University of South Florida. At the time, YSM students were required to produce a research thesis in order to graduate. By 2006, after several years of voluntary participation, the electronic thesis deposit was also required at YSM. On his staff web page, Charles suggests: “The open knowledge movement, focusing on the reduction of disparities in scholarship, will continue to foster international exchange. In our world of mutual dependence and global integration, we must produce discovery and reject the perpetuation of knowledge inequities.” Charles also teaches part-time for the i-School at San Jose State University, including credit courses on medical and health sciences librarianship and Consumer Health Librarianship.
