- Dealing with spam
- Thoughts by Peter Suber, October 30, 2009.
- By "spam" in this context I mean the use of a project tag (oa.something, especially oa.new) on a page that is not relevant to OA.
- As far as I can tell, OATP had no spam until October 29, 2009. See the items tagged that day by katam.
- My provisional solution: tag each item with oa.spam. This will allow users to read a filtered feed excluding that tag. Not many users will bother to read a filtered feed, and such a feed could only exclude the spam already noticed and tagged. But at least we can (1) make it possible and (2) share the load of tagging spam. I may soon make a filtered feed excluding oa.spam and add it to the list of custom feeds, so that users don't have to do it on their own. But I'm still thinking this through. (See the drawback, next.)
- One drawback to this solution: a determined mischief-maker could tag relevant sites with oa.spam and cause them to be excluded from the filtered feeds.
- Meantime see the Connotea tag library for oa.spam.
- Another provisional solution is to do nothing, or at least wait to see how large this problem becomes. If it remains small, it may not be worth the trouble of switching to filtered feeds, especially when they would carry their own risks.
- If anyone has a better solution, please join this discussion!
- So far, as far as I can tell, user serg1111208 is the only one to spam the project more than once. --Peter Suber 09:24, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

- "Lambert Heller combined the OATP project feed with his feed on the tag openaccess at Delicious ..." - please change to "Lambert Heller combined the OATP project feed with the feed from several persons using the tag openaccess at Delicious ..."
- This is a wiki. Please feel free to make the change yourself. --Peter Suber 16:52, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
