This list is part of the Open Access Directory.
This list is based on two articles by Walt Crawford, "Pioneer OA Journals: The Arc of Enthusiasm, Five Years Later" and "Pioneer OA Journals: Preliminary Additions from DOAJ," from Cites & Insights, October 2006. The original articles are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 1.0 license. The OAD version (like the rest of OAD) is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license. The OAD version is limited to the lists of journals, and their annotations, and does include the surrounding text and analysis. However, the full articles are still online at Cites & Insights. Author's note: Some of these could come back to life, to be sure—but most seem to follow a pattern that becomes familiar. Here and for the remaining categories, where I could determine the patterns, I show the number of issues and formal articles for each calendar year beginning in 1993 (in the form year: issues/articles)—or, for journals that appear on an article-by-article basis, the number of articles (year: articles). Many e-journals in all categories include quite a bit of material in addition to formal articles; in some cases, a “+” shows a journal with unusually extensive contents other than articles. “Many” means that I stopped counting after a couple of dozen articles. Some of the journals followed a publication pattern that became familiar. Where the patterns could be determined there was an indication with the format: years:issues/articles, and for journals that appear on an article-by-article basis, the format is year:articles. The plus sign "+ "shows a journal with unusually extensive contents other than articles. This list is under development and is temporarily closed to editing by most users. To join the volunteers developing the list, please contact us. It will soon be open for editing by all OAD users.

Grist On-line. WorldCat. “Network Journal of Language Arts.” Pattern: 1993: 3 issues; 1994: 2 issues; 1995: 2 issues; 1996: 1 issue. Ceased July 30, 2002—but I was unable to reach any content later than 1996. Listed as an “oddity” because it apparently existed in some non-journal form between 1997 and 2002—but I find no trace of that existence. Full archive for the eight issues from 1993 through 1996. InterJournal. DOAJ. Pattern: in early 2000, 225 accepted items on Web site, dates on individual articles. In early 2001: 620 manuscripts, of which 328 are supposed to be final. Divided into three parts: CX: Complex systems (318), PX: Polymer and Complex Fluids (20), BG: Genetics (2). Status in 2006: While the site is live, it mostly hangs. Other than a note about “server migration” in 2005, the status of this publication is vague. Unable to verify existence of archive in 2006. RhetNet. WorldCat. Tiny amount of odd material on Web site; appears to be wholly inactive since mid-1997. As of 2006, the archives only partly work. [edit]Oddities: The last-clear cases
Electronic Journal of Analytic Philosophy (EJAP). Unable to reach Web site; cached copy on Google indicates six issues between 1993 and 1998; individual issues unreachable. Grist On-line. “Network Journal of Language Arts.” Pattern: 1993: 3 issues; 1994: 2 issues; 1995: 2 issues; 1996: 1 issue. Apparently continues in non-journal form. InterJournal. Distributed on per-article basis. Pattern: in early 2000, 225 accepted items on Web site, dates only on individual articles. In early 2001: 620 manuscripts, of which 328 are supposed to be final. Divided into three parts: CX: Complex systems (318), PX: Polymer and Complex Fluids (20), BG: Genetics (2). Psychiatry On-Line. Finally able to locate UK version in 2001. No issues; 51 papers over the last six years. RhetNet. Tiny amount of odd material on Web site; appears to be wholly inactive since mid-1997. [edit]Pioneer open access journals
The list that follows includes all 189 journals with details, including country of publication for most journals not published in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, or Australia. At the end of each description is a bracketed conclusion or opinion as to whether or not the journal was online and OA by the end of 1995, as follows: [Not OA]: This journal doesn’t qualify as open access even by my loose definition, or at least didn’t in 1995. [-]: I’m reasonably certain that this journal was not available in full-text form online prior to 1996, either because the website says so or based on internal evidence. I could be wrong. [+]: I’m reasonably certain that this is a pioneer—that articles were available in full-text form online by the end of 1995. I usually offer more detail on publication patterns for these cases. [?]: Unclear based on the evidence of the website, or because I couldn’t reach or navigate the website. [edit]A- B Abstract and Applied Analysis. Claims 1995, but actually began in 1996. [-] Acimed.
