*** By "spam" in this context I mean the use of a project tag (''oa.something'', especially ''oa.new'') on a page that is not relevant to OA.
*** As far as I can tell, OATP had no spam until October 29, 2009. See the items tagged that day by [http://www.connotea.org/user/katam katam].
*** My provisional solution: tag each item with ''oa.spam''. This will allow users to read a filtered feed excluding that tag. Not many users will bother to read a filtered feed, and such a feed could only exclude the spam already noticed and tagged. But at least we can (1) make it possible and (2) share the load of tagging spam. I may soon make a filtered feed excluding ''oa.spam'' and add it to the [http://oad.simmons.edu/oadwiki/OATP_mashups#Filtered_versions_of_the_project_feed list of custom feeds], so that users don't have to do it on their own. But I'm still thinking this through. (See the drawback, next.)
*** One drawback to this solution: a determined mischief-maker could tag relevant sites with ''oa.spam'' and cause them to be excluded from the filtered feeds.
*** Meantime see the Connotea tag library for [http://www.connotea.org/tag/oa.spam oa.spam].
*** Another provisional solution is to do nothing, or at least wait to see how large this problem becomes. If it remains small, it may not be worth the trouble of switching to filtered feeds, especially when they would carry their own risks.
