University of Calgary

Here's a summary of what we're doing:

Keynote speaker, Leslie Chan from the University of Toronto, who will be introduced by our Vice President (Research). Our Students Union is sharing sponsorship for this talk on Friday October 23 and a reception afterwards. Two of our librarians will be available at the reception to answer questions about their poster on Grey Literature and Open Access.

Displays across campus, at the main library and at our branches and locations. As well, the week prior to October 19, we will have a display in the main Administration Building. We will also promote OA Week at our table at the Netspeed Conference in Calgary Oct. 21-23.

Each day, we will be featured in the online campus newspaper with a story related to Open Access (our OA fund, the institutional repository, Synergies, UofC Press, etc.) We are hoping to attract some local media coverage, too. We will be distributing information packages to the Associate Deans (Research), our LCR Advisory Committee, and the Graduate Students Association. We have printed a large bookmark for OA week and will be handing it out at the displays. We will also have a web page that discusses OA and links to the SPARC and CARL documentation for OA week.

Athabasca University

Overview of AU Open Access Week (October 19-23, 2009):

Athabasca University will present a series of five noon-hour webcasts exploring major issues and opportunities presented by open access. Each session will feature an internationally known promoter and developer of open access resources, research or ideas. All sessions are opened to general public.

Monday October 19 - The Open Access Scholar: Features Dr. Terry Anderson, Editor of the Open Access journal, The International Review of Research on Open and Distance Learning.

Tuesday October 20 - Open Access Research Opportunities and Strategies: Patrick McAndrew /and or Candice Thiele are co-directing an International Research Network and they highlight research opportunities, methodologies and results of current projects.

Wednesday October 21 - Open Access Publication: Dr. Frits Pannekoek, President of Athabasca University, presents the vision and challenges of editing and producing paper books, while licensing the free download of the full text.

Thursday October 22 - Open Access Archives and Repositories: Steve Schafer, Director of AU Library, discusses how Open Access relates to and enhances library services. Tony Tin discusses the challenges and opportunities of self-archiving.

Friday October 23 - Open Access Research Opportunities and Strategies: Noted author and scholar Dr. Rory McGreal shares his knowledge of increasing opportunities and challenges associated with Open Access publication of learning materials.

The Dalhousie Libraries are hosting several events to mark Open Access Week. Our intent is to share information with the Dalhousie community about the relevance of OA for faculty and students, and to highlight a number of projects that are currently underway at the Libraries.

• Information booths will be at each of the four Libraries offering a wealth of material on Open Access, including the Canadian Authors Addendum document, handouts for faculty, students and administrators, “I support Open Access” buttons and more.

• A Lunch & Learn session will be held at the Killam Library on Tuesday October 20th featuring presentations by Bill Maes, University Librarian (“Open Access and the Dalhousie Connection”); Oriel MacLennan, Reference Librarian (“Belphégor: A Dalhousie OA Journal Success Story”); Michelle Paon, Reference Librarian (“Institutional Repositories and the DalSpace Advantage”); and Dominic Silvio, Reference Librarian (“Digital Collections at Dal”).

National Interactive Q&A with John Wilbanks on Digital Repositories and the Digital Commons Monday, October 19th, 1:00-2:00 Eastern Time Presented by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) encourages open access initiatives in scholarly communication. Research is much more valuable when it is shared as it enables new research to build on earlier findings to help fuel further discoveries and innovations that are beneficial to society.

To kick off Open Access Week, CARL is sponsoring a free webcast and Q&A session with John Wilbanks, VP of Science at Creative Commons, on Monday October 19, 2009. The webcast was prerecorded and can be watched immediately before the Q&A session, or earlier. The live Q&A session will be held from 1:00 to 2:00pm via interactive Chat. The session will be held in English, however, participants will have the opportunity to ask their questions in English or French [with responses given in English in both cases].

John serves on the Advisory Boards of the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central, the Open Knowledge Foundation, the Open Knowledge Definition, the International Advisory Board of the Prix Ars Electronica’s Digital Communities awards, and on the Board of Directors of the Fedora Commons digital repository organization. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Tulane University, studied modern letters at the Université de Paris IV (La Sorbonne), and was a research affiliate at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the project on Mathematics and Computation.

In Locks and Gears: Digital Repositories and the Digital Commons, Wilbanks discusses research libraries’ role in scholarly communication, their roles in the emerging digital commons/repository infrastructure, sustainability of those roles, and other issues concerning the challenges of improving the dissemination and preservation of research outputs and tapping into the full potential the World Wide Web to successfully arrive at a more dynamic and open scholarly communication system.

The University of Arizona

The University Libraries at The University of Arizona will be hosting two lectures featuring nationally known scholars during its celebration of Open Access Week.

David Shulenburger will give a lecture titled "The Research University Imperative to Distribute Scholarly Materials" on Oct. 20, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Kiva Room at the Student Union. Shulenburger is the first Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and his research focuses on the economics of scholarly communications and universities.

David Wiley will explore "The Broader Impacts of Openness on Education" on Oct. 23 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in RoomA313/314 at the Main Library. Wiley is Associate Professor of Instructional Psychology and Technology at Brigham Young University, Chief Openness Officer of Flat World Knowledge, and Founder of the Open High School of Utah.

    • Each day there was a post on the library's blog, [Highlights from Graff Library][3], on an open access topic and/or resource, such as videos by researchers and students discussing why open access matters, as well as tools, such as author’s copyright addenda, to help you contribute to the OA movement.
    • Library staff members wore T-shirts and/or buttons as a way to start up informal conversations around campus and chat about open access.
    • Held an Open Access Open House at the Graff Library on Friday, October 23rd, from 2-4pm with cake, handouts, and staff available to talk about open access, why it matters, and what OA journals and OA options are available to the City of Hope (COH) community. We raffled off PLoS t-shirts, a PLoS travel mug, and PLoS pens.
    • Contacted via email those COH authors who have published in OA journals to invite them to speak during the Open Access Open House, or submit a quote about why OA matters to them, etc.
    • For library staff, two educational sessions were scheduled. On Tuesday, we had a presentation introducing open access as a concept and discussing the various OA avenues and why it is important to libraries, institutions, students, researchers, and the public. On Friday, a number of staff watched the EDUCAUSE Webinar on open access, "Throwing Open the Doors: Strategies and Implications for Open Access," with Heather Joseph (Executive Director of SPARC) and Tracy Mitrano (Director of IT Policy at Cornell University).

Abstract: Computer games, simulations and virtual worlds are making increasing inroads into academic education and corporate training. This is often fueled by a desire to improve engagement, or to immerse learning in realistic simulated settings, but often limited by economics and resources. Open Education initiatives hint at solutions, but there are some particular challenges in opening access to virtual world, game and simulation educational resources, and in integrating learning and assessment from these into existing systems and practices.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) campus joined in with institutions worldwide to celebrate the first annual International Open Access Week 2009. We joined more than 300 sites around the world participating in this very special occasion. During the week of October 19 – 23, 2009, the UHM Library organized a number of campus events. Activities were designed to help broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access (OA) to research.

On Monday and Tuesday, some of our graduate students, wearing their orange and grey OA T-shirts, distributed literature and flyers at the Campus Center. They chatted with both students and faculty alike sharing special Open Access and Creative Commons informational flyers and colorful OA pens designed just for this occasion. Their efforts helped to increase the number of registrants to our special presentations later in the week.

These special presentations were organized for Wednesday and Thursday at the Queen Lili'uokalani Center. A handful of UHM faculty, who are editors publishing OA journals, and several UHM Administrators took part in a panel discussion about issues in OA publishing on Wednesday. It was interesting to hear the panelists address the challenges of running very successful and highly-respected peer review journals on limited budgets. The panelists also addressed concerns about junior faculty publishing in OA journals in the light of tenure and promotion pressures. Funding for publishing in the Open Access environment was touched on as well.

On Thursday a professor from the UHM Richardson School of law entertained the audience with copyright, author rights and creative commons information. (Yes, believe it or not, the topic of copyright can be entertaining!) Not only did the professor give us a copyright history in a nutshell, but she addressed the nuances with which an author can shape a copyright agreement. We were left pondering a number of issues, including how we at UHM can best serve our own researchers in aligning their publication needs with Open Access publishing.

Both sessions were very interesting, and the audience responded with a great number of questions. They shared anecdotes and concerns and wondered where the UHM community might move next. Due to the hard work of the UHM Libraries’ Open Access Week planning committee, more than 100 people in total attended the events. They were treated to a light lunch and some weightier ideas. We felt it was a huge success!

Our efforts are primarily focused on an awareness campaign. We have developed a local resource website that includes SPARC OA videos, PhD Comics "Nature vs. Science" series (used with permission), and locally developed resources highlighting on-campus OA publications and debunking OA myths. The site has been featured in the campus newsletter, and liaison librarians are publicizing it to their departments.

To further raise public awareness, we've put together a postering campaign, with five posters aimed at different campus populations. Posters are available for download in 8.5x11" sizes from our local OA Week site.

West Virginia

Open Access Week promotions at West Virginia University coincide with the annual “Diversity Week” celebrations on campus. In many ways Open Access is the ultimate form of social justice—bringing scholars and people from around the world together for the common good. Open Access to WVU research will help “Let it Shine”. Open access scholarly communications are part of a growing trend of technological development and resource sharing that is transforming economies by providing access to research results to the world while bringing reciprocal investment back to the local level.

Public service announcements have been distributed to both internal and external news outlets. Promotional packets have been distributed to all branch libraries including posters, flyers and stickers. The University Libraries have added an open access video resources page to highlight "best of" approaches to gain OA support from students, faculty, staff, administration and the public. In a news story we featured a local pediatrician who has published a paper on "RSV" in BioMed Central, available as open access. We also helped to organize the international NDLTD Open Access Week Youtube Video Contest.
