The Committee is composed of staff from the UC Berkeley Libraries, and the Library and the Berkeley Chapter of Students for Free Culture are co-sponsoring the event. The scheduled local speaker, Prof. Mike Eisen (co-founder of PLoS), will welcome participants at 6 pm, and will moderate questions and discussion after the webcast, until 8. The first event is from 2:45-5pm. It will start with an informal talk and discussion by Dr. Eisen (who is the PLoS Biology academic editor-in-chief and is appointed with the DOE Joint-Genome Institute, UCD Genome Center, UCD Section of Evolution & Ecology, UCD School of Medicine-Dept. of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, and is a passionate OA advocate). He will speak on "Why Open Access is Good for Scientists and the World"; this will be followed by a world-wide webcast and is gauged to "broaden awareness and understanding of OA, including recent mandates and emerging policies, within the international higher education community and the general public".

The second event will be a repeat of only the webcast which will occur at 6:30pm at end at 8pm. Both events are tentatively scheduled to occur here in UCD Genome & Biomedical Sciences Facility, room 4202 which is located at 451 East Health Sciences Drive, Davis, CA, 95616 (confirmation of the room number will be sent out soon).

We will be broadcasting the video and serving pizza for students, staff, and faculty who register prior to the event. Following the broadcast we will have a discussion of what we are doing to support OA, as well as discuss the next planned event which is a discussion of textbook prices. We will be distributing OA buttons, and we hope to generate interest in starting a Macalester chapter of Students for Free Culture. Update for the Day: We distributed over 90 Open Access buttons and 25 students participated in our broadcast viewing. We will be following up this evening's program with further discussions with members of the student government.
