Lithuania

  • Link for more details, if available: The Lithuanian Association of Serials (LMPA), the Lithuanian Research Libraries Consortium (LMBA) and the Lithuanian Academy of Science organize international conference “Dissemination possibilities for Lithuanian research journals in the world” at 21st October 2010. Target audience - scientific journals editors and administrators, researchers and librarians. Conference program include presentations about new developments in journal publishing (Taylor&Francis scientific research in Lithuania), ScholarOne Manuscript Central (electronic peer-review system), Lithuanian research journals on the web (findings from LMPA research), as well as practical information about open access publishing (how to use OJS, how to offer OA journal for the DOAJ, how to find information about OA resources). The LMBA Consortium member - ISM University of management and Economics organized an international conference "Innovation Driven Enterpreneurship" (http://www.ism.lt/bmra2010) and on October 15th a post conference "Innovation in Academic Publishing" was organized by the library. Among the speakers - Alma Swan (via skype) and Daniel Williamson.

Macedonia, Republic of

The Annual Conference of the Librarians’ Association of Moldova is entirely devoted to the problems of Open Access in the Republic of Moldova (November11-12). Master’s Degrees students of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication of Information of the State University of Moldova created a video about the importance of Open Access for science and education (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcAbIJQrs_0&feature=player_embedded).

  • RCAAP (Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal = Portugal Open Access Science Repository): is an initiative that aims to increase the visibility, accesibility and dissemination of Portuguese research results, to facilitate the access to the information about the Portuguese scientific output, as well as to integrate Portugal in the wide range of international initiatives in this domain. RCAAP is an initiative of UMIC – Knowledge Society Agency, developed by FCCN – National Foundation for Scientific Computation, offering an advanced service on the Portuguese Network of Science and Education (Rede de Ciência e Educação). The project’s execution has the technical and scientific participation of the Minho University. The project is financed by the Programa Operacional Sociedade do Conhecimento and UMIC.

Ukraine

On October 14, 2010 the American Library of National University Kyiv Mohyla Academy hosted an Open Access Section meeting as part of the 2nd International Forum “Informatio 2010: Current Issues of Information Society”. Presentations included current developments in open access projects worldwide, and knowledge sharing among Ukrainian repository projects managers. The participants discussed benefits and challenges and outlined cooperative actions to promote open access in Ukraine.

United Kingdom

To celebrate Open Access Week, UK-based BioMed Central are hosting Open Access Africa in Kenya. Open access to the results of scientific and medical research has the potential to play an important role in international development, and this conference will discuss the benefits of open access publishing in an African context, from the perspective of both readers seeking access to information, and researchers seeking to globally communicate the results of their work. University of Southampton/EPrints is launching a week-long Open Access Mandate Adoption Challenge for OA Week. Representatives of universities, research institutions and research funders the world over that have adopted (or are planning to adopt) an OA mandate are invited to register their policy in ROARMAP (the Registry of Open Access Material Archiving Policies) as a show of force during OA week, setting an example to encourage other institutions and funders worldwide to do likewise. If you know of an OA mandate -- already adopted or proposed -- that has not yet been registered in ROARMAP, please register it (or encourage a relevant official to register it). Please register your mandate in ROARMAP HERE Progress in mandate growth during OA week will be charted by Dr. Alma Swan (a Program Advisor for OA Week) in OASIS (Open Access Information Sourcebook), EOS (EnablingOpenScholarship) and elsewhere.
